American
soprano Cynthia Makris has made an international reputation as an
excitingly powerful and intensely personal interpreter of the great
operatic heroines of the late 19th and early 20th century.
Cynthia Makris made her debut as Tosca in her
homeland Colorado with the Denver Lyric Opera. She won the Metropolitan
Opera District Auditions and the San Francisco Regional Opera Auditions as
well as a prize for her portrayal of the three heroines in Les Contes
d´Hoffmann.
Cynthia Makris' name is closely associated with Richard
Strauss' Salome, which she has sung all over the world, including
productions in Berlin, Tokyo, Strasbourg, Lisbon, Munich, the Australian
Opera, the Scottish Opera, Hanover, Stuttgart, Helsinki, Philadelphia, and
Rio de Janeiro.
Cynthia Makris´ portrayal of Lady Macbeth at the
Savonlinna Opera Festival and in the ensuing video brought her
international reputation. She repeated the role of Lady Macbeth at
La Scala in December 1997 and at the Teatro Colon in May 1998.
Cynthia Makris' repertoire encompasses the dramatic
coloratura roles of Bellini, Donizetti, Mozart and Verdi as well as the
lyrical dramatic roles of Puccini, Strauss and Wagner. Her present roles
include Norma, Anna Bolena, Abigaille, Lady
Macbeth, Leonora in Forza and Trovatore, and
Tosca, as well as Korngold´s Die tote Stadt. Recent additions
are Beethoven´s Fidelio, Puccini´s Turandot and Minnie
in La Fanciulla del West.
Miss Makris has sung at La Scala, the Teatro Colòn in
Buenos Aires, the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden, the Bavarian State
Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the State Opera in Berlin, the Royal
Opera in Stockholm, the Opéra du Rhin in Strasbourg, the Flemish Opera,
the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Teatro Bellini in Catania, the Opéra de
Normandie, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Opéra Comique, the Finnish
National Opera, the Teatro Municipal in Santiago de Chile, the New Tokyo
Opera, and the Teatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro.
Since 1998 Miss Makris has been a regular guest at the
Teatro Colòn, and since 1993 at the Savonlinna Opera Festival and since
1994 at the Finnish National Opera.

RECENT AND UPCOMING:
In fall 2001 she was featured in a production of Il
Trovatore in Sao Paolo and Miss Makris made her debut as Minnie
in La Fanciulla del West at the Finnish National Opera, a role she
repeated at the Aalto Theater in Essen in the spring of 2002. Song and
opera concerts filled the summer of 2002, followed by Senta in Bonn
and Wiesbaden in the fall. Miss Makris made her debut at the Semper Oper
in Dresden with Amelia in Un Ballo in Maschera in November
2002.
January and February 2003 brought her to the New National
Theater in Tokyo for a production of Arabella and to Helsinki for
La Fanciulla.
Performances of Macbeth followed in Tallinn in April
2003 and in Santiago de Chile in May. In the summer of 2003 Miss Makris
sang the title role in Turandot at the Savonlinna Opera Festival.

Miss Makris is singing
Minnie in Giancarlo del Monaco's
production of La Fanciulla del West at the Teatro Regio in Torino
in January and February 2004.
In March and April she will
sing Norma in a new staging by Renata Scotto at the Finnish
National Opera, a role she recently sang in Werner Schroeter's staging at
the Deutsche Oper am Rhein.
