The Bulgarian tenor Kaludi
Kaludow studied in his native Varna and was the leading tenor at the
Sofia National Opera 1978-89 while guesting at many European opera
houses. He nowadays lives in Warsaw, where he is the Artistic Director
of his own festival, Vivo il canto, and teaches singing.
Highlights in his career were
performances as Attila at La Scala in Milan, Dimitrij in
Boris Godunov in Chicago and Houston; Radamès in Aida at the
Berlin State Opera, in Philadelphia and with the Israel Philharmonic
conducted by Zubin Mehta. He also sang Pinkerton in Madama
Butterfly in Rome and Buenos Aires, Cavaradossi in Tosca at the
German State Opera in Berlin and Dresden, Il Trovatore at the
Hamburg State Opera, Macduff in Macbeth at the Vienna State Opera
and in Florence, Rodolfo in La Bohème in Barcelona and Tokyo, as
well as Andrea Chenier in Amsterdam.
Recent engagements
include Giordano’s Madame Sans-Gêne in Zürich, Riccardo in Un
Ballo in Maschera in Copenhagen, Dresden and Brisbane, Erik in
The Flying Dutchman in Malaga, Alvaro in La Forza del Destino at
the Savonlinna Opera Festival, Turiddu in Cavalleria Rusticana at
the Dalhalla Festival, Francesca da Rimini by Riccardo Zandonai
in Amsterdam and Canio in I Pagliacci at the Savonlinna Festival,
Vespri Siciliani in Palermo and Attila with the Teatro La
Fenice in Japan.
The long list of conductors he has
worked with include Claudio Abbado, Riccardo Muti, Krzysztof Penderecki,
Zubin Mehta, Charles Dutoit, Horst Stein and Fabio Luisi. He sang with
some of the greatest singers of our time, such as Mirella Freni, June
Anderson, Cheryl Studer, Placido Domingo, Nicolai Ghiaurov, Renato
Bruson or Sherrill Milnes.
In addition to numerous radio and TV
broadcasts, he has recorded Mussorgsky’s Khovanshchina and Borodin’s
Prince Igor for the Sony Classic Label, Puccini’s Manon Lescaut for
Naxos and Janacek’s Glagolithic Mass for Decca. A video recording of the
1991 La Scala production of Verdi’s “Attila” under the direction of
Riccardo Muti is available on the Videora Label.
