Maestro Alberto Hold-Garrido was born in Barcelona and raised in
Denmark. He studied choral and orchestral conducting at the Royal
Academy of Music in Copenhagen between 1988-91, and continued his
studies at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki in the legendary
conducting class of Jorma Panula between 1991-94. He also took
classes with Sergiu Celibidache in Mainz, Germany. From 2001 to 2003
he served as Music Director and Principal Conductor at the Royal
Opera House in Stockholm.
After his graduation in 1994, conducting Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte in
collaboration with the Sibelius Academy opera school, Alberto
Hold-Garrido started working as assistant conductor at the Finnish
National Opera. He conducted Verdi’s I due Foscari, Salome, Traviata
and Il Barbiere di Siviglia. During this time he worked in closely
with the stage directors August Everding, Götz Friedrich and Gian
Carlo del Monaco. In the summers of 1996 and 1997, he assisted Leif
Segerstam in the production of Tannhäuser at the Savonlinna Opera
Festival.
Previous to his nomination as Music Director, he already directed a
large number of productions in Stockholm, among them Norma,
Fliegende Holländer, Rheingold, Otello, Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliacci,
Carmen, Carmina Burana, Lustige Weiber von Windsor, The Barber of
Seville and Don Carlos In January 1998 he lead a triumphant
performance of Norma with Metropolitan singer Marina Mescheriakova
as Norma at the Deutsche Oper Berlin as part of the Royal Swedish
Opera’s tour.
In the summer of 2001, Mr. Hold-Garrido conducted Verdi’s Aida at
the Savonlinna Opera Festival and Verdi’s Macbeth at the Dalhalla
Festival in Sweden. In fall 2001 he toured with the Welsh National
Opera with La Traviata and made his debut with the same work at the
Frankfurt Opera. In 2002 he directed the new productions of
Puccini’s La Rondine in Helsinki and Wagner’s Tannhäuser in
Stockholm. He then returned to Savonlinna Opera Festival reviving
Rigoletto and took the production on tour to Scandinavia, featuring
Dimitri Hvorostovsky. In 2003 he toured with the Savonlinna’s
Macbeth production to Santiago de Chile.
Highlights of the 03/04 season include a new production of Verdi’s
Il Trovatore at the Welsh National Opera in Cardiff, Donizetti’s
L’elisir d’amore in Stockholm, and Bellini’s Norma, staged by Renata
Scotto, at the Finnish National Opera. In summer 2005 Maestro
Hold-Garrido returned to Savonlinna with Aida, to Stockholm with
L’elisire and conducted Tosca at the Hedeland Festival in Denmark.
In the season 2005/06 he returned to the Finnish National Opera with
Norma, Salome and André Chenier directed by Giancarlo del Monaco. In
this season he will also conduct Norma in St Gallen, Switzerland and
a symphony concert with the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz in
Germany.
Before ending up to the opera-field, Mr. Hold-Garrido worked with
many symphony orchestras in Sweden, Finland, Germany, Italy and
Spain. His symphonic repertoire encompasses works from Bach till
Henze, with preference on the classical-romantic and the
late-romantic repertoire, as well as impressionism and expressionism.
