Vladimir Baykov,

The young Russian bass Vladimir Baykov studied at
the Moscow State Conservatory with Peter Skusnichenko and Svetlana
Nesterenko and graduated in 2003. Additionally, he took part in Galina
Vishnevskaya's opera singing centre in Moscow from 2002 to 2004. He has
received numerous awards in national and international singing
competitions, such as the All Russian Singing Competition Bella voce in
Moscow (1st prize), The Mirjam Helin International Singing Competition
in Helsinki (2nd prize), the Maria Callas International Singing
Competition in Athens (3rd prize), the Belevdere International Hans
Gabor Singing Competition in Vienna (finalist and diploma), the Queen
Sonja International Music Competition in Oslo (3rd prize) and the
International Singing Competition Neue Stimmen in Gütersloh (finalist).
In 2004 he participated in the International Queen Elisabeth competition
in Brussels, where he was awarded with a special prize. In spring 2004
Mr. Baykov received the distinguished Irina Arkhipova prize.
His first professional engagements were at the Moscow Opera Theatre,
where he performed amongst others the roles of Alfonso, Gremin, Salieri
in Mozart and Salieri by Rimsky-Korsakov, Mendoza in Betrothal in a
Monastery and Kutuzov in War and Peace by Prokofiev as well as the three
bass roles in Boris Godunov - Pimen, Varlaam, Rangon. From 1998 he
worked with the Moscow Stanislavsky Theatre singing Don Bartolo in Le
nozze di Figaro, Don Basilio in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Lodovico in
Otello, Sourin in The Queen of Spades and Bertrand in Tchaikovsky’s
Iolanta.
Following his success at the Mirjam Helin Competition in Helsinki,
Baykov was invited to sing Colline at the Finnish National Opera under
the baton of Maestro Alberto Hold-Garrido. The same role he sang with
Stefan Soltesz at the Aalto Theatre Essen in 2003/04.
Recent engagements include Timur in Turandot at the Malmö Opera, Sweden,
Alidoro in La Cenerentola and Oroveso in Norma in St. Gallen,
Switzerland. He will also performe the role Altomaro in the rare heard
Händel-opera Sosarme in Lisbon and at the Spoleto Festival in Italy. In
2005/06 he is looking forward to sing the title part of Boris Godunov at
the Thêatre de la Monnaie, Brussels. He will also return to the Aalto
Theatre in Essen for Colline in La Bohème.
A regular soloist of the Moscow State Philharmony since 2000, Vladimir
Baykov frequently sings concert and oratorio repertoire such as Bach’s
Magnificat, Cantatas BWV 82 and BWV 173, Haydn’s Schöpfung (Rafael,
Adam), or the Requiem by Mozart.
