       JAE-CHUL BAE, tenor

 

         

  • South Korean tenor Jae-Chul Bae graduated from the Han-Yang University in Seoul in 1994 before moving to Italy, where he currently makes his home. From 1994 until his graduation in 1998 he studied at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Milan with Jenny Anvelt and Umberto Grilli.

    He was a prize winner in numerous international singing competitions such as Giulietta Simionato in Milan 1998 (1. Prize), Francese Vinas in Barcelona 1998 (The best tenor Prize), Placido Domingo Operalia in Hamburg 1998 (Placido Domingo Prize), Bilbao Competition in 1998 (1. Prize), Giuseppe Verdi in Parma 1999, Jaume Aragall in Girona 1999 (1. Prize) and Francisca Cuart in Palma de Mallorca 2000 (2. Prize).

    As a highlight of the year 1998, Jae-Chul Bae sang in the winners gala concerts in Hamburg with Placido Domingo. The following year he was invited to sing Cavaradossi (Tosca) in Budapest, Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor) in Bilbao and Rodolfo (La Bohème) in Tallinn. In 2000 he sang the Requiem by Verdi in Palma di Mallorca as well as several opera gala concerts in Pärnu, Bilbao and Madrid. During the season 2000-01 he performed Cavaradossi in Seoul, Manrico (Il trovatore) at Sabadel Opera and Duca di Mantova (Rigoletto) at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf. Later that year he sang the Verdi Requiem in Tallinn and at the Riga Opera Festival in Latvia.

    In 2001 Jae-Chul Bae made his debut at the Savonlinna Opera Festival as Duca and at the Vienna Volksoper as Rodolfo. In 2002 and 2003 he returned to Savonlinna’s Rigoletto production that was also taken on a tour to Sweden and Denmark. The 2003/04 season brought him as Rodolfo to the Welsh National Opera directed by maestro Carlo Rizzi and as Duca to the Malmö Opera. In 2004/05 he sang Manrico (Il trovatore) and Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor) at the Saarländische Staatstheater, where he has a permanent engagement til 2007. Future engagements include amongst others Don Carlos and Pollione in Saarbrücken and Rodolfo at the Welsh National Opera in Cardiff 2006/07.

    Mr. Bae’s operatic repertoire also include Riccardo (Un ballo in maschera), Macduff (Macbeth), Faust and Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly).
